Hi everyone,

Loving the MacBook but a lot to learn at the moment...

I can get Microsoft Office for Mac for free from the university and also anti-Virus - probably MacAFee..

I know there is Mac Office software, forgot the name, but not sure whether to buy yet. I don't think I need both..

I did install and then un-install MSN Messenger for Mac. I unistalled it because a strange icon like a hard disc icon appear on the desktop. I think it was an 'installation' icon. I could not delete it.. Hard to exit MSN too, so I forced close, then deleted.

I want to re-install MSN but not have that strange icon on the desktop!

I am also thinking of what software other to buy and also to download!... Any advice appreciated!

Oh! My Nexus One would not pair via bluetooth, not sure why. I did see the six digit number, but no request to input it on the Nexus..

I will also check out Skype for the Mac too!

You don't need Microsoft Office. It stinks! Use iWork, it's brilliant! It's genius! And has a lot more to give you than MS Office... You don't need an anti-virus for your Mac. There are no viruses till date for the Kernel of a Mac.
MSN messanger is very stupid, at least the software for mac. Windows' version is A LOT BETTER!!!
The hard disk icon that appeared is like a USB stick... Can't harm your Mac. You install the needed software you can find inside the hard disk icon that appeared and the press right click on it and eject it... After you installed the needed software of course
Buy Cocktail, download Onyx and AppZapper! Cocktail has a couple of awards, it keeps your Mac tidy
Onyx does the same but I prefer Cocktail. AppZapper deletes apps with a SINGLE click. You are not waiting like you are on Windows... I have probs pairing with my p1i too... weird!
SKype is great, I use it a lot No lag, no probs. It's awesome, you have inbuilt iSight and a built in mic! You're ready to go! Just call someone

Hi, I will reply more later..

I need Microsoft Office for Entourage for my Exchange Server to work.

Anyone know of other software that will access my Uni's exchange server. Their support desk says that the 'built in' Mac Mail Application will not work.

I bought iWorks today, so will install that soon! ( now done! )

Interesting about the anti-virus software, so why are there products for the Mac? Is it just to make people spend money for software that they do not need? I am a tad cynical!

So research and choose Cocktail plus AppZapper or Onyx and AppZapper? I will research later!

Skype's interface seems to be similar to MSN, and doesn't quite have the same interface as the Windows version.

Today, need to :-

transfer my iTunes library from my PC t my MacBook Pro, and then set up my iPod Touch for the MackBook.

find a good flv player,

pair my WiFi printer and test it.

Download Skype.

Create folders for my own piccies etc!

Think of more later!

Anti virus for Mac is a scam. I'm not sure about spy-ware.
Transfer iTunes is easy. iTunes does it for you.
flv - ? Flip for Mac.
wifi it never worked with me
Skype - thru iChat?
Folders - thats more than easy. let iPhoto arrange your pics, sorted by date, mark, face, name, whatever you want.

how does iTunes do that when the library is on my USB hard disk? I did try home share but not successfully.

I am tempted to plug the USB drive into the MacBook and just copy my music directory over. Then make sure the path is set correctly on the MacBook's iTunes.

Thanks for the info. Will sort these out and report back!

thanks! I have downloaded Cocktail, Onyx and AppZapper but have not had time to learn, but I do have free time with week!

I am interested in a good flight simulator and I know there is a freebee, and also X-PLane. I heard X-Plane only has US scenery! I do not want to run Microsoft Flight Simulator using boot camp or something like that!

Also wonder if my joystick will work, it's a Wingman, I think!

Hi! Didn't work that smoothly.... so I re-did my library and now have no iPod Touch etc to synch with it!

Hi everyone,

I have been given a brand new Iomega Compact Edition Hard Drive 500 gb to use with MacBook Pro.

My use would be to store video, music, documents, and I will learn how to back up my MacBook Pro to the USB hard drive.

I can see in the instructions that it suggests to format the drive for Mac OS.

1. select Applications -> Utilities -> Disc Utility...
2. In the left column, click on the drive icon for the Iomega Drive. Make sure you click on the orange drive icon, not the volume icon

3. select partition tab.
4. Change volume scheme from current to 1 Partition
5. select Mac OS Extended (journalled) from the format drop down menu.
6. Click on the options button
7. select the type of partition needed for your Mac.

GUID Partition Table for bootability on an intel based Mac

Apple Partition Map for a Power-PC Based MAC

8 click oK.
9. click apply ( 10.5 - 10.6 ) or partition (10.4). The drive is ready to use when format completes.

I do have another smaller drive, that I can use and run files on Windows XP as well as my MacBook Pro.

I can run video files from that hard drive on both my XP Machine and my MacBook Pro.

What are the benefits of formatting for the Mac?

I am thinking it is best to format the drive for the Mac because the default NTFS structure is not best suited to the Mac.

Off to the Wiki now and Mrs. Google!

Any advice much appreciated!
