OK, I had enough so today I formatted my notebook and re-installed everything. Phone is now connected and back-up/sync works fine.
Now my desktop with over 200GB...
I'm sure it was some software preventing the phone from connecting but which...
To all those whose phones don't sync/connect, if you've tried everything and all fails format your PC. A last resort measure but when all fails...
Thanks to all who tried to help.

Go to control panel and click on the system then got to hardware and device manager. there may be a conflict. delete the question mark, most probably regarding the usb connection, then try to refresh in order that the usb cradle will be identified. Leave your pc suite cd to update the driver.

I had similar problems with my p900 and XP. I deactivated the screensaver on the phone and no more problems. Don't know if it was a coincidence as the phone was detected the first time with screen saver active.... but anyhow it's been working as it should now.

I have encountered this same problem on my laptop: phone connection monitor lists the appropriate com port as connected, and mroute works (!) but the rest of the pc suite tools and the filemanager fail to detect the phone. Doesn't matter which com port, usb or bt/ir - same behaviour. Works fine on all my other machines (all running the same XP pro, including the laptop).
Not sure when it started, and since I only dock the phone with my laptop to get a network connection (I dont use synch features or anything in pc suite really) I haven't bothered investigating it.
Recently however, I did try a complete pc suite reinstall. I removed all traces of the previous installation first (every file installed by the installer, and every registry key created under HKLM/Software and HKCU/Software).
Doing all this made no difference whatsoever. Problem remains after a fresh pc suite installation.
So it does look like an outside factor, but I don't have any antivirus or firewalls installed (plenty of other exotic and possible invasive software tho). If anyone does manage to figure out exactly whats causing this (maybe a failed dll com server registration, wrong version of some common file or a service thats not running properly) I'd certainly like to know.

A friend of mine bought a new PC about 6 weeks ago and he and I spent a few hours (me on the phone to him) and we went through all the steps described here and no connection (PC Suite worked fine on his Win98 machine). My only observation is that his copy of XP did NOT have SP1 but had SP2. Now I am not an XP specialist, but I use an old version of XP Pro and Home (laptop/PC) and I have SP1 and I have never had any problems with PC Suite. Now check "Add and Remove Programs" in Control Panel - do you have SP1 installed as a patch?

Yes I have SP1 (and all the current win updates)

in fact the XP version I have installed on all my computers is a recent one with SP1 integrated. SP2 is still beta afaik.
Note that my laptop hasn't always had this problem, it worked fine the first couple of weeks or so. I use the laptop for development and I'm always installing/uninstalling all kinds of stuff, so I guess it didn't take long for the "wrong component" to be affected/replaced... just have to figure out what exactly. Anyone willing to fully investigate the various pc suite parts should be able to track this down. I might give it a go myself, but it is a fairly complex package with many 3rd party solutions bundled together with SE and Symbian kits... dunno when I'll have the time to spare.

Yes - that is what I was trying to say. The only difference between my PC & laptop and my friend's was that on his SP1 was integrated but on my machines it has been applied as a patch. Now what this means is that there are different versions of XP and this may be the issue. Or I could be completely wrong!

I had a similar problem to-day, after everything worked fine initially. I fooled around with the port settings and drivers for awhile, then I got the idea I should reboot the P900....and that did it!

ok, i having a same problem, can get connected in Phone Connection Link but just can't identify the phone... too bad...
so i think as Omar said, its a software conflict problem... i tried in my friend PC(which is fresh installed Windows XP SP1 ), no problem at all...straight away can sync once i put in the P800 in his computer...
However, it just still don't want to work in my comp...
Anyone got any ideas which software is the culprit??
I got no firewall but got palm desktop... however, uninstall palm desktop already still doesn't run...
hmm how come symbian got so many problem, i never see a PALM face any problem to SYNC...

Same problem to me... P900 connected... I can install applications or keep my Outlook in sync but I can not use the file manager... it says device not connected !
Same version of PC Suite ad same mobile firmware... only updated my Windows XP so it is sure 100%... it's something Microsoft did in the latest on-line updates (non the SP1).
How I love my Linux desktop... if only SonyEricsson would support it
