Speaking of Iraq (I'm not sure where I got this link from, probably this site!)
http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=30387
Never mind, it looks as if GSM (and sense) has won out over there.
As for Operators...
http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=45302&site=unstrung
"In October the Iraqi Communications Ministry granted two-year licenses to Egypt’s Orascom Telecom; a partnership between Kurdish communications company Asia Cell and Kuwait’s National Mobile Telecommunications (NMT); and a consortium including Kuwait’s Mobile Telecommunications Co. (MTC) and Atheer Tel of Saudi Arabia (see GSM Wins Iraq Battle)."
The odd thing is, they want Iraq to remian one country, yet have split Iraq into 3 seperate regions: Northern, Central and Southern, with each network only operating within their region. So, theoretcially, someone with a phone is Basra is Southern Iraq, can't use their phone in Baghdad without roaming... stupid
Anyway, the operators in the UK have already been stated:-
Network Operators
Vodafone (GSM 900 with 3G services)
O2 (GSM 900 mostly, formerly BT Cellnet, NOT owned by BT)
Orange (GSM 1800 with 3G services, owned by France Telecom - NOT Hutchison)
T-Mobile (GSM 1800, formerly One 2 One)
3 (WCDMA, owned by Hutchison)
Virtual operators
Virgin (T-Mobile)
Fresh (T-Mobile)
OneTel (Vodafone)
Tesco Mobile (?)
BT Mobile (T-Mobile, though I've heard they've switched to Vodafone, NOTE, they do NOT use O2!!)
3 also have a roaming agreement with O2's GSM and GPRS network, this is because their 3G network coverage isn't quite what they'd like it to be (although it's far batter than Vodafone). Interesting, as all the current 2G operators (including O2) have their own 3G licences, they just haven't launched their services yet.
There may be other Virtual operators, but I don't know.
3 are practically giving handsets away (particularly on prepay) and the other four are ronudabout the same when it comes to price. You can get very good deals on 3 (they're desperate to get more customers) but customer services, network reliability and the lack of open WAP access means that they might not keep them...

Update for greece, too
Telestet has been renamed into TIM
Vodafone and Cosmote Have remained as they were.
TIM, Q-telecom and Vodafone Are using GSM 800
Cosmote is using DCS 1800
Also Q-Telecom was using Vodafone's network when it opened, but now it has built its own network for the big cities...However it still uses Vodafone's network outside them...
