The word on the street is that Microsoft is determined to call the next Xbox anything but the “Xbox 2”, since they’re supposedly convinced that dim-witted consumers will assume that the PlayStation 3, on account of it having a “3” in its name, will sound more advanced than an Xbox 2. Which sounds to us like they don’t think much of the buying public, but whatever. Anyway, you never know how much stock to place in these things, since whether or not they’re working on behalf of Redmond or not we don’t know, but the latest evidence that they’re edging away from calling it the “Xbox 2” is that a firm called Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates has been conducting a survey where they’re asking people which name for a next-generation Xbox system they like best. The list includes the names Xbox HD, Xbox 247, Xbox E, Xbox 2, Xbox EV, Xbox 360, Xbox FS, and Xbox NE, and then they go on to ask which of these sounds more “next-gen”: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5? The one option that isn’t listed at all is “Xbox Xenon”, which is supposed to be current codename for the box.

i read the following post by Merlin from AusXbox Forums

Codename for Next Xbox Confirmed in Screenshot: Xenon

So here it is, we hope ?!?.

Here's a quick glimps of what "could be" the next Xbox. Actually "confirmed code name" is now known as Xenon

Check it out on link below to see pic, article is shown in full below. Source and author named.

No matter what you call it, "Xbox Next," "Xbox 2," "the neXtbox," etc., there is no shortage of hype surrounding Microsoft's next game machine. While the system specs were allegedly leaked to the online community in late April, there were conflicting reports about the document's authenticity. Thankfully the latest news is a bit more concrete.

Xbox news site Xbox-Scene.com was able to provide Australian GamePro with a single screenshot from an Xbox Next development kit, codenamed Xenon. Although the source is anonymous, we can confirm that this screen is authentic.

Although the screen is of the development kit launcher and not a game, it does reveal a few interesting tidbits about the upcoming system. The launcher is used to configure the system as well as start up game programs.

To see what the Xenon developer sees whenever the development kit boots up, click here.

The most obvious bit of news is the confirmation of the name Xenon. While this has been bandied about before, it was never in a confirmed source. The name may change before the system officially launches, but for now the next Xbox system is being referred to as Xenon.

Of secondary note is the "106.79 GB FREE" listed in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Those who have attended gaming expos such as E3 will no doubt have seen a similar launcher screen on Xbox dev kits -- that number refers to the amount of free hard drive space on the system. This does not guarantee that the final, retail form of the Xenon will have a hard drive (rumors have been flying that it may not) but it would seem to indicate that if the system does not have a hard drive, it will have some form of mass storage.

The program listed on the screen, Dolphin.exe, is a demo program that shipped with the development kit in order to give developers a starting point when creating new code. A similar demo shipped with the original Xbox development kit. (Trivia buffs will recall that one of the original PlayStation development apps was a T-Rex demo.)

At this point it doesn't mean much, but it is worth noting the ".exe" extension on the end of the name. This is the same as a standard PC application. Xbox software all uses a ".xbe" extension. It could be nothing (as the file name is just a name) but it could mean that Microsoft is seriously toying with the idea of a combination PC/console in addition to a standalone video game unit.

Xbox 2 won’t be backwards compatible with original Xbox

Apparently some top Xbox execs are quietly confirming that the Xbox 2 isn’t going to be backwards compatible with original Xbox games. Seems that since they’re using a different kind of processor and graphics chip set, getting the emulation to work was going to be a real pain in the ass so they’re just dropping it entirely. You gotta hope that this means that Microsoft’ll work even harder to make sure there are as many titles available for the Xbox 2 when it comes out in late 2005 or 2006 (don’t bet on it, though), but that said, not having backwards compatibility is really more of an inconvenience than anything else, since if you have a ton of original Xbox games lying around then you probably also have an original Xbox console to play them on.

We’re not sure if these are legit or not, but an anonymous tipster who claimed to be a part of a focus group for the upcoming Xbox2 sent us some questionable screengrabs of two of the “logos and console designs being considered for the next generation Xbox system” (that quote according to the focus group material we saw). We’d send ‘em back to the drawing board if it we were in that focus group, but supposedly they’ve got more cooking—it’d be pretty foolish if they didn’t—so we’ll see.

The Consumer Electronics Show has confirmed that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is set to give a pre-show keynote speech in Las Vegas on January 5th next year - with a public announcement of Xbox 2 widely expected.

Gates will speak on Wednesday, January 5th at 6.30pm PST, the night before the opening of the CES event - which is the largest trade show of any description in North America, and is expected to attract 130,000 professionals from 110 countries over its three-day span.

The Xbox 2 announcement, which was originally rumoured to be planned for the Game Developer's Conference earlier this year, is now hotly tipped to feature in Gates' keynote, after the GDC announcement turned out to be regarding Microsoft's XNA development platform.

Gates has always taken a direct interest in the Xbox project, and originally planned to announce Microsoft's entry into the console market in his CES keynote in 2000; the announcement was ultimately delayed to the Game Developers Conference that year, but Gates used his CES keynote a year later to show off a near-final design for the system and exhibit early game software, including Munch's Oddysee and Malice, for the first time.

Many of Microsoft's key game development partners already have early versions of Xbox 2 development hardware, with the platform - codenamed Xenon - thought to be based on a multi-processor design using IBM's Power5 CPU architecture and ATI's next-generation Radeon graphics unit.

Microsoft to release three versions of Xbox 2

A SLIDE from a non disclosure agreement (NDA) presentation seen by the INQ points towards Microsoft launching three versions of the Xbox 2, one of which is a fully functioning PC.
The presentation, understood to have been given to analysts and market researchers in the UK earlier this year, plots a timeline for the introduction of the systems. Xbox Next and Xbox Next HD are planned for Autumn 2005, whereas the Xbox Next PC is pencilled in for Autumn 2006.

The standard Xbox Next will not include a hard drive, which will allow Microsoft to cut costs on this basic unit. Xbox Next HD, as you might imagine, does include a hard drive and will offer increased functionality based on this. Xbox Next PC is, according to the presentation, an entry-level PC that runs Windows and all standard PC software. It also includes CD Burner, Wireless keyboard, mouse and controller and will work best connected to a high-definition TV or PC monitor. Media Center functionality - like movies, music and photos - is also included. The device will also play most available PC games.

System outline specifications note that internet browsing and instant messaging would be key applications, and that the entire unit will be smaller than the current Xbox, although it will not be possible to upgrade the shipping memory or processor.

The year-long gap between the mooted introductions of the 2 standard Xboxes before the Xbox Next PC is an interesting decision, which suggests that Microsoft realises the time that the market needs to acclimatise to TV media functionality. Since the Vole expects to ship Xbox Next before the Sony PlayStation 3, 2 versions of the console allow it to get the first wave out before PS3, but to also spoil the launch of Sony's flagship by concurrently announcing the PC version.
