Hi Guys,

Don't know where most of you are, so not sure this will help you, but O2 UK should be releasing the software for P910i BlackBerry in Feb 2005, according to an O2 account manager for CPW. I have this from the Head of Data at Carphone, and have every reason to believe it is accurate info.

Just spoken to SE and have been told that the "official line" is that the BlackBerry connect software has not been developed as yet. Strikes me as very odd given the screenshots on the previous page. Extremely disappointed and as far as I am concerned, this is complete mis-marketing by SE.

Very poor. Very poor indeed.

@Dave_UK

Presumably the software will only be available as a download to o2 customers? Was on the phone to t-mobile this afternoon who denied that it was ever available on the p900 either. Not a happy chappy!

@squiggs

Yup, it's going to be operator-specific (in the sae way as RIM BlackBerry devices are now), so they will all have to release versions of the software. The difference will be how quickly the various networks intend to support it - O2 look as though they will be first. I'm T-Mobile had it on the P800??

That really irritates me. T-mobile completely denied ever having supported any other devices other than the standard BB handsets. I said that I had a colleague whose handset I had seen it on and they just point blank refused to accept it!

Just out of curiosity, why can't a single client just be released and configured for whatever network your company has the server support with?

Gotta be honest - I don't understand the tech well enough to know why they can't release a generic software for all networks. I would presume it's along the same lines that more advanced features seem to require non-generic firmware (hence the dramatic and horrible increase in branded phones!).

Anyway, T-Mobile UK definitely support BB on the Nokia 6820 so that's just an outright lie. I would try getting through to someone at T-Mob who actually understands the tech side rather than the numbskull CSRs!

Cheers Dave.

I have to say that I'm still very disappointed in all this. Feel very let down. Don't think I'll buy a SE product again. Would have been better off going for the orange SPV C500, which I've used and liked a lot. Ah well.

Talking to my helpdesk and the company account managers at Vodaphone and T-Mobile they both confirmed the same statement.

No further 3rd party devices will be enabled for Blackberry but they will continue to provide only basic support.

This is because RIM (Blackberry) will not support any 3rd party devices anymore and because of this T-Mobile/Vodaphone/Orange cannot provide this support.

I suspect that Blackberry are trying to corner the market with thier new mobile products.

I suspect that what has happened is that RIM have freaked out at the interest in 3rd party products that are way better than there crappy handhelds and realized they will lose big market share so i am sure they are busilly working out a way to extract big dollars out of the option to support 3rd party hardware.

Any feedback on this???

Still no feedback and I very much doubt there will be.

As a result, my P910 is up for sale here:

Hold your horses gents. I'm a P910a owner in the US and my developers are developing client s/w for the BB and BB Connect service. It absolutely IS being released in Q1 05 and IS also carrier-specific. Simple reason - the BB monthly charge is typically metered and limited differently than an unlimited GPRS 'all you can eat' deal, so carriers have to replumb their licensing a little which, as most of us are ware, is not an easy task. The licensing issues with BB is a red herring - already signed sealed and delivered. RIM are hedging as a smart company should between innovative new hardware offerings and new ways to leverage their BB BES occupying the key behind-the-firewall real estate all providers would kill for....

hang on to your P900s, 910s, Treos, IPAQs, and other gadgetry a few more months and ye shall be rewarded.
