> N95 vs P990 (or more fittingly, P1000)

The N95 is awesome. All the features I'd want in a phone. The GPS is great. I own and use many gps units, both BT and standalone, and to have one built into the device is perfect! It's a pity the Nokia UI sucks, as this is an all round champion of technologies. I think the battery life will suffer heaps, and is probably the single biggest shortcoming of this device. Why have all those features if you can only use the phone for half a day?

Why say something stupid when u have no idea it is so. Except for N80, n-series phones last 2.5-4 days on normal usage. If u on wifi all the time of course battery will drain. Comparatively P990 battery do much worse.
Those with N73/93 and K800 have reported that N73/93 battery last at least a day longer than K800.

id be able to compare the 2 batteries, if my brothers new n73 actually turned on when he got it. My k800 battery lasts 3 days if not more, but i cant comment on n73....
Why is it that these sort of threads also turn into fanwars?

one small tips or my suspicious theory on batt life
it can be related to network interaction with respective phone
so to me the battery life is hard to make it a real arguement.
some network might perform good on SE product...some might be on Nokia...some might be on Moto.
One old example from my travelling experience using my old T39
remember it have a standby estimation.
when I depart from Malaysia using MAXIS....I remember it have 300hrs claimed standby
then i have to stop at bangkok....when i on it...the stand by drop to 100hrs on the first roaming partner...then I switch it...manage to get 140hrs. (sorry...cannot remember who is the network)
then when i reach finland...i get 400hrs using sorena or telia network.

agreed. at least you will have a phone the features work on regardless of perceived battery life. wots the use of a 990 that could go a week without charging if sweet FA works properly? what does your therapist say about it?

Standby time is affected greatly by the interval between registrations, and there's not much you can do about that (except change network).
The next issue is your location, such as being on the edge of two cells, or in a very poor coverage area.
Comparing standby times is therefore not a good argument or benchmark for these types of discussion.

don't get your hopes up on the camera, 5mp at that size of phone/lens is probably gonna be a bad camera(i.e. not like a decent digital camera), gps looks nice though if it doesn't drain a lot of battery.
The LG KG920 had a good camera, so it's possible the N95 will be good too. It's unfortunate that it only has a LED lamp though (and no zoom) but none of the Nseries devices have particularly amazing cameras (including the N73 and N93). I presume Nokia don't regard this as the most important function of a smart phone.
I also wish they'd stop saying DVD quality video. VGA isn't DVD quality! The video might be 30fps, but pan quickly and the compression means it still jerks like crazy. Also, Carl Zeiss made such a big point AT A NOKIA EVENT about the differences between 2-3-4-5 megapixel being virtually insignificant. The most significant step from 2 or 3 is to 8 or 12 megapixels (by doubling both X and Y resolutions). If the sensor isn't any bigger, as you say, the pictures might still be disappointing compared to a normal 5 megapixel camera.

Besides GPS and HSDPA please tell me why this phone is better then P990i?
the 5 MP camera will in all likelyhood not be any better in terms of quality than the n73/N93 modules, just larger pics.
So to sum up you've got GPS, HSDPA & 5 MP camera, I honestly don't see the whole point, and besides the 2 cannot be directly compared as the p990i is more business focused with the qwerty and touch screen whereas the N95 is more consumer centric.
But since everyone will compare them let me just say with this phone on 3G and only GPS in use the battery will be lucky to reach 20 hours that for me is something I'd rather not have, although I must say GPS does look interesting if maps will be free, but knowing Nokia they probably won't be.

Huh buddy, certainly you are not a pilot. 20 hours is a lot for gps ! My Garmin 72 only manages half as much :( (Is enough thou). On average I only fly 2 or so hours :D Also, for the following recovery 20h will be more than plenty as well as for hiking (althou gps is more of a gimmick for hiking). Obviously for 'incar' navigation the battery time is not a issue. What exactly is your point - if you have any :D The N95 is a top class device. Nothing in the world comes anywhere close to it (size and feature wise) I personaly won't buy it because its GPS function (I already have a dedicate gps). I won't get it for its hi speed internet (althou my service provider supports it already). The main reason I am getting it is the superb video camera. Is the smallest, most powerfull solid state handycam out there money can buy. I know more about handy cams then cellphones and the N95 is a 'bomb shell'. Just imagine the videos I can take with such a small handycam and later tweak with avisynt :D

3.5mm jack? smaller size? 802.11g? If you don't care about 5mp, how about Carl Zeiss lens? 30fps? ... to just name a few
