At this stage, SEs latest phones are lacking in any new technology but until the end of the year, we cant make the judgement that SE are behind other brands. Sure at the moment they certainly are, but we are yet to see the high end phones that are going to be released. TV mobiles have been hinted as an upcomming strategy, Two 5 megapixel phones are due this year, we are yet to c Maria (w950 competitor). But as mentioned before, SE arent going to give us a complete all in one product. Youll see a great camera (and hopefully good video) in cybershot, great music capabilities in walkman, messaging and smartphone in P and M series, TV mobiles, etc.

It is always my opinion that SE using UIQ3 is a mistake. SE invested so much money and effort and fumble badly with P990 (bad taste may linger for buyers). It still havent got to point of coming out with non-TS which the mass market wants (i.e. a smartphone masquerading as a full-feature multimedia phone/computer).
Look at what Samsung/LG is doing with S60. Their S60 handsets are sleeker/smaller than SE UIQ. So I wont be surprise if LG and Samsung can quickly leapfrog ahead of SE in this aspect.
A smartphone platform is not just about getting the base OS ready. It requires many add-on software and this is where 3rd party developers comes in. For example, a lot of Nokia's S60 capability like (office doc, pdf, realplayer, video editor etc) are co-developed with 3rd software partners. It would be more expensive for SE to go this route as the volume of UIQ may not be sufficient to entice 3rd party software developer to come on board. And finally the availability of 3rd party software. For the advanced buyers, this is an important factor in determining purchase. Similarly for the operators.
So now LG and Samsung S60 can immediate reap the benefits of S60 platform without needing to go thru all the pain of going it alone. Well ok, Moto is coming out with a UIQ3 but nobody have much idea how devoted Moto is. It may just be one off if the Z8 dont sell well. Dont forget Moto is developing many Linux and WM phones at the same time.

but you are forgetting the touchscreen aspect mib. This is something SE are committed to, and if they walk away from it many users will be forced onto WM smartphones.
I know you find it hard to comprehend that quite a lot of people prefer touchscreens, but SE's traditional smartphone business has been geared towards users who expect touchscreens. I'm not saying that there is no market at all for hardscreen SE smartphones, but I think it's a mistake to believe that there is no place for touchscreens in the SE line up.
And so far Nokia has no real touchscreen support. Just as you decry SE's lack of N9x series competitor, so do many phone users decry Nokia's lack of touchscreen support.
Despite touchscreens not suiting you personally mib, you simply can't make that decision for other people. I personally will only consider a smartphone that has a touchscreen, so Nokia is completely out of the question for me. I am by no means the only person who feels this way.
Sure I like the N series, they are cool phones, but if N95 had a touchscreen I'd be on it in a flash. But Nokia ignore that market. It's no better than SE's lack of decent video support.

I understand your reasoning. I agree that there are a group of TS enthusiasts. But a TS UIQ3 will inevitably goes up against WM which have much better offering in terms of functionality and 3rd party software. I dont think current batch of SE UIQ3 phones can compete well with WM. The TS market (i.e. business enterprise) segment is a niche market with specific business requirement (like integration with MS Exchange). For this segment a full keyboard phone is prefered over a TS (in other words, TS is a supplementary input device)
A non-TS OS does not need to be marketed as a smartphone per se. Look at some of Nokia S60 phones (except the N95) are marketed as a full-featured phone. What I am getting at is a non-TS full-OS allows the creation/deployment of new products faster. Incorporation of new functionality is also cheaper. If I remember correctly, K800 came out earlier than N73 (both 3.2MP). But Nokia has leapfog ahead of SE by 6-9 months in releasing a 5MP. Sofia has been rumored for ages and yet still not see the light of day.
LG and Samsung can easily take reference design for N95 and quickly come out with their 5MP / VGA video rec based on similar chipset. I wont be surprise if LG and Samsung will beat SE to this. SE is just taking way too long to have come out with a viable OS suitable for high-end mass market phones. Moto has just came out with their Razr2 incorporating a Linux core.

Yes,I think that Sony is lagging behind and moresoever its taking a long time to announce new phones!
I think they better release Sofia fast or else it will lose some of its fan following....!

I am still awaiting the "non touchscreen" UIQ3 based handset from SE. I belive we were told (not by SE!)that UIQ3 goes well with non touchscreen phones as well. I still don't see a direct competitor for the non touchscreen S60 devices as there is still no sign of a non touchscreen UIQ3 based phone
So my question is, is UIQ3 only gonna be a touchscreen affair? Does SE not believe there is a market for nontouchscreen smartphones?
