in all fairness i think everyone is a little disappointed in sony... not just U.S.

imo

let's get it straight shall we? SE is not just a "branch" of Sony. SE is owned by both Sony and Ericsson in 50/50 proportion. Ericsson is one of the biggest providers of mobile network technology in Europe. They have as much standing in their own industry as Sony do in electronics.

Both Ericsson and Sony have equal say in decision making at SE.

When I said Sony I meant SE. I did sales for over 6 years now and very very aware of the differences.

But I wish cell phones would be as of good quality and features as most of SONY high end products...

...but presumably not at the same prices as high end Sony products command? An unlikely situation.

It wouldn't surprise me if 's lack of Quad Band products is due to technology licensing costs, remember that last year Nokia pulled out of CDMA citing rediculous prices being charged for the technology licenses. Nokia sells well in the budget market, Americans buy lots of budget phones, licensing costs cut into manufacturer's tight profit margins... you see where I'm going? It's hardly surprising doesn't want to go there with anything but volume sellers like S700 and K800 whose development costs are probably recovered by European Sales.

American's love You-Tube. Why don't create a Quad band clam with with 30 fps Handycam quality video, 3G and Wifi, and market it as a You-tube phone? It should sell at least as well as the iPhone (1-2% market share).

I bought mine at Digicel. I also bought my previous P910i from them as well. I won't be buying any more though. I am going to quit . I am really disappointed by what happened with me and my P990i and I want a quad band high end phone. I am looking at the N95 but I wait until at least Christmas or after to get it.

BTW,you bought yours in DR or Orange UK?

That's also part of the reason why SE doesn't sell very well. However that's entirely operator's fault. But I don't see that changing anytime soon. It's going to be years before the US catches up to Europe and Japan in mobile technology.

The operators are the main reason why Americans are behind in the cell phone area. I recently went to the Dadeland mall in Miami and showed my P990i to a Tmobile dealer and the guy did not know whether it was a phone or a remote control. So if he does not know I certainly don't expect Americans to know either. People only see the phones that the operators display.

What makes me laugh all the more is that I bought my p990 in the Caribbean and they refer to the Caribbean as third world.

Just make sure Bush dosnt here you say that. You dont want him to blow up the Caribbean!

You are correct,he might be reading this post for all we know.

USA is still having a big portion of CDMA market....besides that...they have iDEN...so it is having the operator making the call what phone they want to offer.....

given the fact tht the presence of so many technology......it will reduce market share for company who focus on limited technology...like SE ....SE don't have any CDMA offering for USA compare to Motorola, LG and Samsung and Nokia

moreover not many SE phone is quad band which suit USA 850 frequency.

so don't get upset american is not having big SE user base.

My recent trip to US with my W580 come with a weird situation....one guy come to me and ask me...where you get this iPOD!!!! hahaha....

Nar I am not upset that they don't support i am upset that is lagging behind in some ways on their upper end phones, more so the 850 Mhz. I have a serious problem buying a GSM high end phone that when I travel to the US cannot support four basic frequencies. I find that to be a bit like putting a camera on a phone but it can only take videos and no still shots.

I just don't see how one can justify making a PDA does not have such flexibility. Could you imagine a Blackberry that can only be used in the UK?

Well, good point, but a couple of things to point out:

- Marketing a phone as a Youtube phone would create a licensing conflict with Youtube (or Google) for that matter. And for some reason I just can't imagine SE ot AT&T talking to Google for use of the Youtube trademark.

- To be marketed as a Youtube phone would suggest that the phone is video oriented. While it seems to take OK video (at least on paper) it doesn't mean that it does video that great so that it can handle straight video use.

- Considering the Cybershot branding though, it could be marketed as ... ummm ... a crazy idea ..... an imaging and photoblogging device. However that would still require striking some sort of deal with Flickr or Photobucket, or one of those.

- And once again. In America, if it doesn't go through the carrier it pretty much doesn't go through. I'm assuming SE can't handle a marketing campaign in the US (too extensive and expensive), so they have to rely on operators for marketing and that's where they're getting screwed.
