ok, then the topic should be innovative in a huge way because almost every phone brings out something positive

I think all manufacturers are innovative in their own ways.
What would you say was innovative as regards to mobiles?

You admit innovative means to make a positive change, but then say increasing the optical zoom by 33% isn't innovative.
It might not be
hugely innovative but its still innovative.
Whether the change was from 3x to 4x optical zoom or from 3x to 48x optical zoom a 'positive change' has been made and so that would be classed as an innovation - hardly life-changing - but still an innovation nonetheless.

I have to disagree. If that's innovation, then the word is being over used. Upping specs is different than adding fresh new features. If upping specs is innovation, then every phone has its own little pieces of innovation which would make SE absolutely mediocre, compared to Chinese clone phones.

However, regardless of how small an innovation is, it is still an innovation regardless of which company it is.

i would say innovative is to bring something new, or to improve something old in such a way as to render the old one obsolete. 3 to 4x optical zoom would not be innovative for me, but 3 to 20x would be as it makes 3x totally useless and obsolete.
thats what i think innovation in "mobile phones" is

C'mon goldenface, improvement is NOT innovation. Innovation is the black and white MCA-10 camera attachment by Ericsson, HPM-10 portable MP3 player attachment, onboard GPS, dual active SIM, Business Card Scanner. Not 3x zoom to 4x zoom which can be a race just like megapixels, internal memory etc. Let's not degrade innovation to that level

@mode
I'm only using the official meaning of the word which if taken literally, means the person who stuck an eraser on top of a pencil made an innovation.
Its a good idea to establish the real meaning of the word before we enter into a discussion as to what we each believe an innovation to be, otherwise we end up squabbling like a crate full of battery- chickens.
@QVGA
That almost sounds like a re-invention.
The Dual memory card slot is an innovation. Being able to use both SD and Sony M2 cards is handy, saves money and saves time.

to me introducing optical zoom to phones is innovative but increasing 2x to 3x zoom is just an improvement.
introducing a camera in phones was innovative so as AF and MP but increasing MP is not innovative,its and improvment.
if increasing Optical zoom from 2 to 3 and MP from 2-3 was innovation...then everyday is an innovation.

@Ranjith
Then I guess we're starting to move at the right direction in determining innovation in the mobile context which most of us share
@goldenface
Exactly, I'm just intepreting your argument based on the definition that I gave a few pages back. So I guess we are on the same page after all
