I know that some people like small phone and a 3" display is enough for them, but I don't understand why SE insists to use 320×480 HVGA.

It would've been a good phone is SE threw a high resolution display there. And I hope the camera is more than 5 MP.

+1

Agree with resolution, but I think didn't have an option with that size, they are stuck with these resolution @ this screen size as if they increase the resolution all items will be smaller too, and maybe small to a level to clone the original mini which a lot of peoples had issues duo to the small screen...

just take a look at Satio, it has 3.5'' but with a little more resolution, 640x360, so here if you compared the new mini 3" screen to Satio's 3.5" screen you will see that

3.5" = 640x360
3.0" = 480x320

From resolution perspective we can calculate the aspect ratio, Satio does have 16:9 ratio, but the new Mini has 9:6 (or 15:10 to make it simplaer to imagine ).. in another words

Satio = 3.5" = 640x360 = 16:9 = 1.777
New Mini = 3.0" = 480x320 = 9:6 = 1.5

using the diagnoal size and aspect ratio we can calculate how big the screen is...

but first lets convert the inches to Centimeteres ( I don't like inches any way, + centimeters are IS )

3.0 inches equals 7.62cm ( according to google )

so 7.62 will equals sequared height + sequared width, and coz we know that width = 1.5 x height, lets assume that height is Y.. so width = 1.5*Y

so 7.62² = Y² + (Y*1.5)²
7.62² = Y² + ( Y*1.5 * Y*1.5 )
7.62² = Y² + ( Y² * 2.25 )
7.62² = 3.25 * Y²
58.0644 = 3.25 * Y²
Y² = 58.0644/3.25 = 17.866
Y = root of 17.866 = 4.226

so Height is 4.226cm and Width is 4.226* 1.5 = 6.3339

next Mini screen size is 6.334cm*4.226cm

so next Mini screen density is 75.78 ppc ( 192.4ppi )

compared to Satio's 82.68 ppc ( 210ppi ) ( source )

yes it's lower, but where can have a 3.0" with higher resolution that is not odd, if want to have same PPI as Satio for the new Mini, then resolution will be very odd, imagine a resolution of 523x350 !!

BTW, iPhone 3gs which have 3.5 but only 163ppi ( it has 480x320 resolution, yes same as the new Mini but with larger screen )

the only exception is iPhone 4, which is known to have much better dpi which 326ppi...

but iPhone 4 is made by Apple which made iOS also so Apple can make alot of thing with the OS, can modify Android yes to support more dpi without having trouble with UI resizing to make it user friendly not like the original Mini, but will need more customization and they don't want this as it will need more time !!

They could've just used a FWVGA 480×854 since it is common on Android phones regardless of the display size.

When this resolution was first introduced, most phones had 3-3.2" displays. I am talking about J-phones. SO906i was one of them too (3" 480×864 & released in 2008). SE has always been stingy with the rest of world.

In all fairness, none of the others that release phones have released the same in Japan and the rest of the world and been successful, except SE with X10/SO-01B.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but SE is the only manufacturer that is present in Japan (with keitai's etc) AND the rest of the world? (HTC android doesn't count here).

So the X10 minis had QVGA and an upgrade to HVGA isn't good enough? Again they are mid range, and with the Vivaz successors being higher end maybe they'll be WVGA. I don't see why there won't be something for everyone.

I'm really optimistic about the new 2011 mini range. There is absolutely no reason why it can't do really well, considering that the 2010 X10 mini seems to have done well considering it only had Donut at launch.

If 16:9 ( 1.777777 ) is wide in devices like Satio, 5800, N97... what about 480x854 ? it's alittle bit wider ( 1.7791 ).. + did you saw that SO906i ?

Imagine a phone with just the upper section of this calmshell.. do you think this will be mini ?

it's about the same dimention plus or minus the good Aino ( it's has 3.0" too but lower res. ) so do you think Aino is can be Mini ?

+ you forgot the point of more resolution in same size ( higher DPI ) will mean smaller in-screen items.. so smaller icons, smaller Android bar, smaller text... every thing will be smaller... will have to make some UI tweaks in order to make it friendly and will need that time to make better and faster updates !!... and already got too many complaint about how small item in the original Mini duo to small screen... what you suggest is to have bigger screen with higher res. so items will still be small for finger use. it will just have more empty space !!

basically, when I first saw that res. I thought it's low, but later when I re-thought about it.. it's nice and the best option... so if any one will need higher res. then wait to see X8 successor... that one have to be bigger screen and higher resolution. a resolution that will satisfy us

I just want two 's from 2011, a next Mini or next X8 for my fiancé, and some high end for me

I was just saying that FWVGA isn't impossible on a 3" phone. If they will make a HVGA phone, that's fine. But I am not expecting something above $200. Funny, X10 Mini was sold for almost $300 the last time I check despite its crappy hardware.

The last I heard, HTC legend was sold for twice the price with the same hardware as the SE X8. And overpricing is subjective. It really doesnt refer to what a bunch of fools think. Its market related and is subjective to a model of another brand with the same specs. Can you name me another top brand with the same specs as the X10 mini but cheaper?
