Sorry I gotta dissagree with the whole hissing thing.
Between my dad, brother, self, we've owned over 60 phones in the passed 5 years. The only phones to have hissed have been the nokia 8850 and 3210. And the 8850 only when it was charging. I've been with ericsson since the r380 and i've not had a problem with any of the phones. I ordered my p990i today hoping to take delivery 2mrw. I was under the impression that the p series phones were smart phones.

TBH I am expecting a hell of alot of problems from the p990i but because SE's customer service is far superior than that of nokias. I'm not so worried because I know the porblems will get ironed out.

I have to agree that SE has been lagging on the innovation front.
With the p990i as my prime example.

I love these silly debates. Comparing a N70 with a W800 is funny, as one is a smartphone designed for business (playing music is NOT its strong point) and the Walkman is geared for music but also has a great camera that still holds up well today (The N70, sadly, doesn't have a good camera for even the time it was on sale).

But, the N70 is still a damn fine phone. In our office, we have about four of the things and use them for SatNav and other application testing. Mind you, we also have a N73, N91, N80, E61, N93 and N71 (the latter being hideous).

A more accurate comparison might be with an Nseries device and a UIQ3 device and here I'd have to say that SE is lacking. UIQ3 is looking dated and the hardware (well, memory) is letting the side down. The P990 is too big to compete with things like the HTC TyTN or the new BlackBerry Pearl. SE do need to refresh the range, and get some more kit out that's more akin to the M600/W950 but with HSDPA, WiFi 802.11g etc.

SE is still leading the way for music and imaging (video will presumably follow). A W800 with 4GB MS Pro DUO card is something special (why would you want a N91? Indeed - nobody did, which is why it's dead and buried). A phone like a camcorder? The N93 is great for video, but how many operators are selling it this Christmas? Oops, looks like it's SIM free or nothing. As mentioned elsewhere, most consumers aren't that interested by all the extra features offered by smartphones.

So, we're left with Series 40 vs SE devices. Here, SE is in a strong position. Decent multitasking, decent media player, excellent file manager (and file organisation, instead of millions of sub-folders on Nokia), good Bluetooth implementation, better themes... Series 40 3rd Edition might want to look like S60 but it isn't anywhere close. Then again, my white 6233 looks very nice! Funny thing is, I'm using the W810i as my daily phone even with the low-res screen because it's so much more intuitive.

And, when it comes to churning out multiple phones on the same platform, this is what has allowed SE to gain market share. They're copying Motorola and Nokia, and had to do it. Everyone does it (look at the car industry) because it's stupid to develop a whole new platform for a specific model. They should be applauded for what they've done, and new features have been introduced since 2002 so it's not as if they're still churning out T68s in K800 casings. The web browser, news reader, blogging software and OTA updates are all things that Nokia are still lacking (6131 excepted, with more coming soon).

I think, all things considered, SE have done very well to turn their business around. Indeed, even SE haters might regret not buying shares in SE even if the profits could have been used to buy another Nokia, Motorola, Samsung or LG.

SE is now trying to get into the fashion phone market with the Z610. I've seen it, and it's okay (not as small as I thought - I assumed it would be PEBL sized) but don't expect it to be the last. If they can get an 8800 style device on sale, I think they'll eat up even more of Nokia's marketshare.

Time will tell...

Well, the issues you stated above with regard's to s60 handsets ..ive never experienced any of the issues you raise...but then, apart from handset issue's, alot of error's come by way of the user..especially with smartphones...

both companys have their good and bad point's...i have both an n80 and a k800i, and neither are faultless.

having used the e61.. apps randomly crash all the time due to memory overloads.. i get kicked off the brower or my agile crashes... this is a reality for smartphone users

guys whether you want to believe it or not.. nokia does have issues.. just like any other phone...like i said most of the s60 have not had an sound quality issues till recently

the clicking noise.. i had it in the 3 n73's a tried, the n93 and my dad's 6131..

luckily my e61 doesn't have it

I think we can all agree that SE need more smartphones in their portfolio if they want to effectively compete in the smartphone/business market. However, I would take issue with the charge that the P990 is too big. I don't think every smartphone should be made so small that only those with infant like hands and no fear of developing myopia can use them.

I like my Vario, for example, because it is large enough to use. I want a smartphone that can actually deliver on usability as well as functionality. Smartphones should be practical, and whilst there is a place for the smaller brand of smartphone I think there is also a place for the larger brand too.

I think these are good points. SE has focused more on the average consumer up until now, hence their lack of a wide variety of smartphones. Advanced video recording capabilities and smartphone features are all very well and good for mobile geeks like us, but the average customer may not be so interested.

Again we have the issue of giving the customer what they want. A simple UI that allows for easy access to features is a huge bonus with customers and I think SE's UI is rather good. It is fairly intuitive, with fairly logical, straightforward options and paths.

I agree with this to an extent because whilst I do recognise the validity behind releasing similar handsets, I also don't think it is a good idea to release too many of them nor do I think it is particularly good to release handsets that are too similar.

The W700 was something of a disappointment in my eyes because it is basically just a W800 with a slightly different name and housing. That sort of similarity is not a good showing in my book.

The thing is that SE have been very sensible about how they have gone about expanding their portfolio. They have focused on quality over quantity so far because they knew that as a small company they were much better suited to deliver on that premise. Now that they have grown their business somewhat they can afford to offer a bit more in the way of quantity.

I also think they were jolly sensible to avoid the smartphone segment (with the exception of the P series) because personally I don't think they would have done as well by catering more to the business market at the expense of the wider consumer market.

Again we see that they are now able to cater to the business market a little more e.g. the M600. Patience has been their greatest virtue so far I think; they have waited until they were in the right position to deliver what they really wanted to and we are just seeing the beginning of that now.

I think it is more correct to say that SE does not have quantity because it does not have resources (small company ) to come up with more phones. I dont think quality has anything to do with it.

It is a known fact that SE phones do not excel in quality compared to the industry. K750 was buggy when it came out. And P990 is bug-ridden even after such long delay. And I dont even want to mention the cheap quality casing used in recent phones.

hey man.nokia are good more that SE but now letss see.you said SE have small screen.for example se k750i has a small screen than nokia n70.but the resolution at SEk750i is 176*220 and at nokia n70 is just 176*206.such a small resolution for a such big screen.right?that nokia has 2mp camera but the pictures can not be compared with quality of picture from se k750i and other se wich are having 2 mp.the sound is more poor than SEk750i.i heard the sound.one of my friends is havin nokia6680 wich is almost the same phone with nokian70 and i heard the sound.so bad,and the headset is so bad.my first SEk500 reproduce the sound more better with headset from K700,with big bass and so good quality.and you compare SEmobiles with nokia smart phones.compare with SEP990.nokia are too big,SE are more slight.
anyway, we know nokia is more better, but SE is not bad.almost averyone has o SE. SE is having the most good phones for music and for photos.the video recordint is bad but the picture is the best.seeSEk800.flashlight from nokia mobiles phone are weak than SE flashlights.
we know nokia has a better recordin video and optic zoom, but SE will incorporate those in their next mobile phones.after this SE will have the best camera phone.think at K800 with optic zoom and video recording 640*480.maybe this will be next generations of mobiles phones.
i true than SE produced mobiles phones wich are having the same functions but different names.for example we have D750I,K750I,W800I,W700I.see any difference?o yea.the name, hull and software.w950i and m600,any difference?just hull and software.in rest is the same.
anyway i likek SE and im so pleased by them.

Considering that SE has only been around since 2000/2001, I'd say they've come in leaps and bounds. They don't have the history (Nokia), nor the resources (samsung). Even to Sony, SE is/was considred a completely seperate entity. It was an experiment that, if it bombed, sony could just shrug it off and move on.

Except it didn't bomb. The other manufacturers started copying SE. If you recall nokia had the smallest screens on phones (next to some ericssons). What nokia HAD was a user friendly interface that went down the tubes with the colour models. On every different Nokia the settings for certain things are located in different places. There is no standardization.

And not to be disrespectful to Nokia, but they were going bankrupt. The N series was their last hope. Lucky for them.

SE Have come in leaps and bounds. But they have had to be cautious, not putting all their eggs in one basket. Developing their fanbase.

Because they knew....

... they knew that their are Nokia users out there with their heads so far up their @$$ that they'd need a glass navel to see where they are going.

is backed up by two great and big copmanies ... It has all the funds it needs.
Having said that, was new 2001 and therefore small. Still it was leading in many areas from the start. Plan was to pick it's market segments one by one and do it good. And also to repay the investments to its parents. Now that has been done and is making great profit and is expanding.

The quality in handsets is good, how much can you really ask from plastic? If you want steel go buy a vertu.

Also don't turn this thread in to a history or economic one...

We don't want to start talking about profit per handset and stuff like that do we ...
