To clarify things not mentioned in the initial post:
Bad web browsing. Well, the latest FW has gotten up the speed and it doesn't crash all that much anymore, but still you don't have the fantastic zoom feature shown in the DEMO of the Apple iPhone. Plus you got half the resolution to work with.
Video playback of larger-sized files is just horrible. Sometimes it doesn' start the video, sometimes it does start it but bails out when I'm trying to fast-forward by tapping the screen. Also somewhat faster with the latest FW though.
Of course, it's a tad unfair to compare the P990 with the iPhone seeing as it's not even released in the US yet. But as Steve Jobs said in his keynote, you should really make the hardware for your own software in order to get things done right. SE makes great hardware, but the Symbian UIQ platform is only a handful better than old Palm OS 5.
Since I know how great Mac OS 10 is, I am really eager seeing that running on a mobile platform. Hope it isn't sluggish.
Put simply, bugs and sluggishness kill smartphones.

Also, I'm quite amazed by how many people are judging their phones by their brands.
Frankly, I don't give a damn what brand my phone is, as long as it works as advertised, and the P990 don't. (Even though things are getting better, I know.)
Regarding suppord for 3rd party apps on the iPhone, I am pretty sure it'll come. It's Mac OS; porting them from the regular desktop version wouldn't be too much of a hassle. As long as it has a currency converter I'm good. Well, in addition to all the stuff it already has that we know of.
Apple will obviously release a 3G version to address European customers, but only time will tell when.
What'd like to point out with this discussion isn't that the iPhone is a better piece of hardware, 'cause it isn't, except for all those sensors and the big screen. No instead, as somebody pointed out, it's the software that is the key in *every* device.
It doesn't matter if you have a DVD recorder with broken firmware, or a Wi-Fi enabled phone with a badly coded OS. As long as you can't easily use your hardware, it's no use.

Strongly disagree on that. I don't even have the latest fm and yet using video feature mainly for watching DVD movies without any problem. I encode them using superb M3 and usually get the 350mb size. Watching movies in P990's high resolution screen is a real experience, even super fast action movies goes smoothly, without stops etc.

This is what will kill the iPhone: Apple has made it impossible to install applications on the phone except java apps. The only way for more features to be included is to hope that the developers add it to the next software update.
What kind of crap phone can't install apps???? Even my 10 year old ti-83 calculator has the ability to install programs.. . . DOH!!

Unbelievable statement.. I don't have the latest fw and yet all the features work more or less as they suppose to work and I am extremely satisfied with my phone. I say more or less because with previous (my) fw people using black barry have problems and also memory leak, after a day or two of heavy usage, cause multitask reduction i.e. automatic close of some background applications or somethimes even working application such as opera. So those problems can't be denied although as I can see it is much reduced with the new fw ( unfortunately I have to wait because my CDA is /65), but to say like in the above quote is ridiculous and just show how easier is in this world to turn beauty into something ugly. God help iphone on initial release.

It's a big disappointment to hear someone say that things work 'more or less'.
We should expect quality from SE, as they've profiled themselves above
Nokia and Samsung. Now to say iPhone is a P990-killer is hard to say, cause we simply haven't seen it working yet.
But one thing I do know, whatever SE does, they've got to seriously compensate the current base of users in order to attract users for the P-series.
For me, I've given up since long. Just running my P990 in normal dummy phone mode until something serious in the market pops up.

lol That's what I am talking about. It is so easy to present it in above way. According to this attitude it would be enough to ask:"Is P990 perfect?". Since the answer is:"no, it's not" what good can be say about it..
The fact that many people are very satisfied users (including me) specially after the new fw is so nicely neglected and overlooked.
If I say that I am a business user (work in a bank) and use it very hardly daily (all features except bbc) like I couldn't use my P910 even close to this, would it meant something to the unsatisfied people, I don't think so.
But that's the life, everybody has it's own preferences and expectations, which is understandable.

ahhh i fellow m3 user.... mysh's app is great isn't it?... i was beta testing when he first started that app.. oh how it's grown...
i'm suprised you've experienced no video issues... i had about 10 videos that varied from 20mb to 140mb and they all had trouble.. it was using the firmware before this latest... so r7a i think
when the video played it was fine, smooth great quality no issues... but waiting for them to start and buffer was unbearable.
to pause check a message and go back to it.. pretty much required me to kill the app...

I think when historians look back on the importance of those 2 mobiles in, oh say 12 months... Well, they'll probably come up with a daring theory: after all, they'll say, it wasn't the iPod! It was, tataa...
Sony Ericsson.
just joking... Just joking
