@ems Thats exactly what the problem is...even i agree an Ericsson on its own would give us much better phones than what SE offers today...but as you rightly said its a dream which has no chance of coming true, thus the only other alternative left for a serious competitor with nokia and here i mean technologically wise and not just sales is if Sony the big japanese co. invest into cell phone R&D just as they do for plasmas, consoles etc... Samsung and LG do it 2 of their biggest rivals..then i don't know why doesn't the mobile industry tempt Sony.I agree once they failed in the mobile business...but then it wasn't even half as big as it is today...Today theres' potential of more than a billion cell phone users world over...and we all know if Sony decides to step up its game it can easily compete with the best in any industry...history proves it!

Thanks for your clarification. I agree with your point that Sony can step up their game if they want to, I just wish they do it within Sony Ericsson cause I don't see them going it alone with this joint venture in place. SE Japan is a case in point, they can easily annihilate the competition.
They need to wake up and smell the coffee and realise that this has become a different ball game. They're being beaten by Nokia.

I dont think that SE is beaten by Nokia.
In the first place,Nokia is primarily seen as a company who makes the largest no of cellphones.
But this does not mean that SE has lost out, agreed SE is a bit slow and also needs to diversify its range, but it has the capability to match and storm ahead of SE
One big advantage is that they have the brand name SONY which they can make use of,SONY has been on the forefront of the Tech world for many decades now and commands tremendous respect globally, but I feel they are poor planners and slow........

If only we could see Korean and Japanses Samsung and SE phones, then we're surely hesitate Nokia leads in technology, unfortunately Samsung and SE "only" enormously nurtures it's own country with innovations while leaving the other regions underdeveloped imo. that's why we can't see 10Mp CCD camera, bravia screens, Soundblasting DSPs etc to any of the samsung and SE phones in the european market. if only those could be implemented for us, i doubt nokia will be the leader some time as well.

You know what,I'll tell you something....
I knew about SONY as a company since childhood but never bothered to find out what it was,I just knew that SONY is a huge company in the Technical/High Tech/Electronics sector.
However just yesterday I happened to go through the SONY website and came to know what an amazing co it is,I feel they are lacklusture guys who dont know what potential they have,if they could encorporate their tech into cell phones I think that would bve a revolution in this industry....
The website is well laid out and they have a wide range of products.
They should seriously think of setting up a huge Lab for R&D and see the amazing results it brings.
I am a tech freak and always keeps myself well updated on the latest tech news,I will be tha happiest person if SE realises even 25% of their potential.
THAT 25% POTENTIAL WILL BE ENOUGH TO MAKE NOKIA CORP CRUMBLE!!!

After all the reason why SE do not try to compete with nokia by trying to put everything in one handset just like N95 is because SE is not stupid!
Just as they mention the reason why they do not want to compete with Nokia with the ultra low end handset, they use exactly the same principle!
It does not worth the effort! Hasn't Nokia stated in the very beginning: N95 is not even expected to have a good sales, it is only a show off of what current tech by NOKIA can do?

@sesukaku
I think you will find that was the N93 Nokia said that about otherwise how could they of had such large supplies available at launch to satisfy the incredible demand.
As i am quite a bit older than most here firstly Sony do have a large R&D department and have had for a very long time. I had been using Sony laptops since they launched and changed from Toshiba. Now where as once i did believe Sony really did produce the best quality merchandise even if they were more expensive you got what you paid for. This is not an opinion i hold any longer and have noticed over the last 5 years in particular a steady decline in their products quality in general. My now old Sony laptop is only 16months old and needed replacing and this is a Laptop that never left my residence. Which is why for my new laptop i have returned to Toshiba. IMHO Sony are trading off there good name charging premium prices and not delivering premium products any longer.
Now as for the question asked in this thread unfortunately the answer is simple the winner wouldn't be SE and what is really sad IMO is even though Ericsson was a much smaller company if the same question was asked before the merger the answer without reservation would of been Ericsson as that is what they stood for quality products that were also innovative.
