The last company trying to ´sell´ a mobile OS is microsoft. Google has just released Android but as a free OS and Nokia has just gone open-source with symbian in an attempt to further develop the system since the older model probably reached a peak. Microsoft believes the mobile computing market will follow the desktop market and a OS that runs on various hardware platforms is the solution. However, WM´s market is not getting bigger, quite the contrary, it was 18% about 2 years ago and its about 13% this year. The companies that are really growing and taking market are RIM and recently Apple. Both companies offer both hardware and software and instead of ´adjusting´ their OS to many platforms and developers, they try to take the most out of a controlled set of hardware, not to mention the efforts on ease of use and friendlyness to the common costumer. I believe this is the best way to go with phones. In the end of the day a phone is a small device set to perform a number of functions in the best way possible and combined hardware/software solution seems better both from a performance and ease of use perspective. Even with third party developers, it´s not enough to have many of em if people are not aware of the programs or know well how to install them. Apple´s solution in this case was the best and Android is already adopting it and others also will in the future. With so many oems an app store simply wouldn´t work with WM. Microsoft seems to make decisions based on ´market expantion´ alone and sometimes forgets what would be better or easier for the person who actually buys the phone. Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to say what I think about the mobile market and why microsoft may not be getting it right this time.

I think Microsoft's "turn" at this new market configuration will be WM7 (they're the last "at-bat"). One thing that has hampered WM is that there is no commercially successful device to go along with it (like iPhone and Blackberry). X1 may be the second (Diamond the first), but probably won't be killer enough to steal huge market share for WM.
I'm not to sure if "free" OS'es are going to be better. Why should Android do any better for mobiles than Linux did for the desktop? If Android never gets a killer app or device, it's success will be limited. WM has the advantage of being totally integrated onto everyones (almost) desktop . With Live/Live Mesh/Skymarket the WM ecosystem will be just as flexible as iPhone and Android.

@sloopjohnb, you are jumping the gun by 6 months atleast. Nokia plan to have Symbian open source by sometime in the first half of 2009. Take into account delays and it could be a year or more.
OS X may be open source but do you see any other manufacturers building OS X phones? Linux, the other "great hope" of open source phone platforms, is the only "smartphone" OS to go backwards in real growth, and shrunk by 16.2% in the last 12 months. Interestingly, most LINUX based phones are actually feature phones and not true smartphones at all.
Regarding WM marketshare, despite the fact it may have slumped it's on the up again. In the last 12 months WM has grown by 20%, increasing marketshare from 11.5% to 12%
The iphone growth in the same period is 230 odd percent. Both WM and iPhone are taking their new marketshare primarily from Nokia, who have only grown by .7%, and have gone backwards in marketshare (65.6% to 57.1%)

Android and Open Source Symbian are still very much on the drawing boards. It's a bit premature to draw any conclusions about how they will impact the market.

Well, SE needs a reform and what better way to start than to go back to high end. If they have an ounce of genuine interest towards their customers (not just their customers' money) then they'd scour forums such as this one and find out that the most viewed and discussed topics that reflects people's interest at any given time are always their flagship/high-end devices.
