I'm with BT Broadband 2000kbps, however lately I have been experiencing downstream speeds of 180-220kbps during weekday office hours. At night, the speed is bang up to 2mbit.

I asked BT about their contention ratio (for anyone not familiar with this term, it basically means the ratio to which you share your bandwidth with other users i.e. 50:1 means that you are sharing your bandwidth with 50 other users). BT were unwilling to discuss any aspect relating to their contention ratio. In fact, I had two people hang up on me, because they wouldn't discuss it.

The main reasons for my connections slowdown would seem to be the contention ratio. On an obscure and well hidden part of BT's website, I found a guide which stated that for a 2000 kbps connection, end users should expect speeds between 400-2000 kbps.

I'd advise anyone to investigate your own contention ratio. As far as I have read, BT business has a contention ratio (CR) of 20:1. Home users would appear to have a CR of 50:1. Certain 3rd party companies offer an uncontended connection (i.e. 1:1), that means your own connection, however that costs upwards of £400 per month.
