I'd agree that the existing flip on/off arrangement gives the best of both worlds, and I do think losing the screen estate for a keypad on the phone itself is a backwards step for Hermione - once you've done that, you may as well get rid of the flip altogether and make it a Treo (one fugly phone imho).
I'm a bit lost as to why anyone would take the flip off their Pxx0; I don't see what you're losing by having it on, whereas taking it off definitely loses you some functionality and practicality, especially in the case of the P910. Surely the beauty of the flip is that you can always move it out of your way, without having to discard it altogether?

So u rather have some plastic instead of keyboard? Ohh... better: using a bt keyboard or an ir one... but in this case I'd buy a laptop or a desk one with microatx. What's the point? U have every kind of text input. Have u tried 7710? Only touchscreen and a few buttons... as we say: "nashpa"

I removed the flip because:
1. I use the phone in the jeans pocket all the time. It was too bulcky with flip.
2. 80% of the times I used the P910 I ended up opening the flip.
3. I don't write SMS on the move. I stop, write, send, and go.
4. I'm pretty good in handwriting so I don't miss the qwerty keypad (and to use it I had to open the damn flip!)
5. P9x0 without flip is more stylish.
6. I use a screen protector.
The hermione qwerty keypad is OK with me because:
1. The phone is smaller than the P9x0.
2. They increased the screen resolution, without decreasing the screen size too much (only a few mm).
And finally:
3. The Hermione without qwerty would probably be the same size anyway, with all the hardware (UMTS+GSM+GPRS+WIFI) and battery it needs to operate, so why not add the keyboard if they had leftover space on the front?

(In reply to the remarks of Hermione turning into a flip-less Treo)
Funnily enough, the Treo started out as a flipped (pun not intended, but nevertheless shamelessly assimilated) device.
I had a Treo 270 and I still suspect the design of the Treo 300 was influenced by frustrated hackers who ripped the flip off their 180/270.
(for those interested: my Treo is still performing admirably somewhere in SE Asia. It was a very good phone, provided it was treated with some basic care)

personally i have used both P800 and Treo 650, and here are my 2 cents:
1) thumb broad is more useful for both text input and GAMES, and I do hand write very well on P800.
2) keypad is better for phone functions (dailing, SMS, etc), not a big fan of the phone portion of Treo
But then, this is just my personal opinion. The option to keep/remove any keypad/thumb broad will fit everyone's peference. Why would SE take away that from us?
I live in the states and thumb broad devices are just not exciting (you would see 3 dozens a day). P serise is much much cooler with the flippable keypad. I mean, how many smartphone/PDA out there can FLIP.

I've had each of the P series and have always removed the flip - it's too bulky and looks horrible.
I'm not impressed with the built-in keyboard of these leaked pics - the phone itself would need to be awesome for me to carry such an ugly looking lump
SE will need to watch their pricing too, I'm getting awfully tempted by the
