In design I think Honda and Toyota are way ahead of VW. Styling is a different matter though. The Germans just seem to have a Knack of doing the surface treatment right. The end result is very high-class and jewel-like. I prefer the Honda driving position, gauges and ergonomics though.

ATM, my personal favourite styling-wise is Audi. Having made a great leap forward with the Mk1 TT, they've followed up with innovative styling ever since to the point where the detailing on the new A4 is just stunning, as is the A5 and the R8. And Audi's influence on Lamborghini styling has been simply superb. The final Diablo, the Murcielago and Gallardo are just drop-dead gorgeous IMO.

I'm glad to hear Audi have finally acknowledged thier critics and decided to place their engines behind the front axle line instead of infront. The benefits to ride and handling should be noticable.

Hmmm... I think I'll pass on that one.

I think the Audi designers should go and look up the word purity in the dictionary. That is not a TT in its purist form, it's the pimped TT fron hell!
I like the colour scheme and the interior styling but shouldn't a Clubsport version be stripped out ala Integra Type R or M3 CSL? The Integra has no A/C, or sound deadening material, lightened windscreen, strengthened valve springs, etc... and the M3 CSL has a Carbon fibre roof and no boot floor!

It's more high street than race track that TT I reckon.

Gorgeous S5 below:

You're right, they don't look like Japanese cars. The latest ones from Japan actually look better, have comparable interiors, and are just as roomy!

During the A4/B5/B5.5 generation, I surely could tell the difference. Hence my Mk.IV GTI. The Mk.5's are painfully boring to look at. (And the B6 Passat is just painful.) Furthermore, the interiors are pitifully cheapened compared to the outgoing generation. And, the Mk.V Rabbit, despite being larger overall than the Mk.IV, has 3 cubic feet less trunk space

Hopefully, VW can redeem themselves with the A6/B7 generation. Some Audi A5 design language will hopefully filter down to VW. The A5's chief designer has reportedly been put in charge of all VW design. We'll see. Unfortunately, I don't trust my current GTI to last that long
