it was a basic phone and i was given credit every ow and then for....well not necessarily emergencies but for when i needed it, and had to buy some myself(i remember the black and orange...orange top up-cards), iremember about beavers cos i took it in one day and the woman thought it was a toy lmao.

but tbh its not like its alcohol or anything(not that the restrictions really work) so why are people getting in a beef about it?

Maybe if they saw it from a different perspective they would understand.

How about, what in the name of flaming hell does an 8, 10 or even 12 year old NEED a phone for? No wonder the woman thought it was a toy, it's just not normal to see an EIGHT year old with a phone.

If you like in a REALLY rough area, and you go places where you'd get picked up by your parents when its dark, then perhaps, but only then.

@Daedalus85

it may not be good to have a phone at such a young age but your making far too much of it.

and if she needed to ring me and tell me if she was picking me up or not, as it was only 5 mins away but had to walk along a secluded(i think) snicket which was quite scary for an 8 year old when it was dark int he winter?

If she's any kind of parent, she wouldn't make you walk at that age, alone, in the dark. She'd come get you regardless.

Fair enough, this isn't the time or the place to be questioning poor parenting.

Bottom line in, I'm strictly against kids under the age of 13 or 14 having a phone, there simply is no need, and I can't think of a single reason where kids haven't managed for the last 50 years without that kind of 'accessory' as a NEED rather than a WANT.

We'll adults did without cellphones since human life began on earth till about 10 -15 years ago.

Basically I thought westerners were more open and did'nt intrude or comment on the way their "neighbours" lead thier lives, unlike in India where everybody likes commenting on the next person, but reading this thread I guess I thought wrong.

Bottom line, nobody has a right to comment on what another human being needs or wants without knowing thier background, and if somebody has money, its nobody elses problem how they want to spend it. If you dont like kids having phones, dont buy your kid one, but its really not right to critisize parents who do, its basically not your problem. If the kid is "irritating" you somehow with his phone, tell him, 90% of the time he'll listen, for gods sake they're children, they dont think like adults do.

very true, this is how england has become though, my neighbours are nosey and used to have disagreements with them, i've now learn't to pretty much ignore one and i get on well with the others now.

As you say though whether its adults or childrens, mobile phones are still a luxury and not a need
