The limit of 128Mb could be to do with the addressing of the memory.
Each byte has to have a specific address (expressed as a binary number, or maybe Hex... I forget) and so you have to set a cap on the number of addresses you have.
Lets take a system with 128 bytes of data. This would need a 7 bit addressing system (Any more would be a waste).
To access the first byte you would access the information from address 0000000 [= 0]
To access the last you would access 1111111 [=127]
To access the 46th byte you would access address 1011010 [=45]
A 7 bit system works wonderfully for a 128 byte memory, but when you need to store more than 128 bytes you need to add more bits to the addressing system!
Apply the same principle to a 128 Million Bytes and you have to have a large (maybe about 32 bit) addressing system.
Thats the way I understand it anyway!

@ thebruce
But we are talking about serial transfer here.
Old MS and MSDuo use only 1(one) bit for data.
How can you explain a simple DSC U50 can read MSPro Duo theoritically up to 32GB?
The recently announced DSC F828 Digital Camera can even acces the MSPro in parallel transfer utilizing the faster access the Pro can offer.
All Memory stick including the Pro only use 10 pin. The pin used as data is certainly less than 10 bit as some of the pins is used as a flag. It is promised that the Pro can go to 32GB using the same 10 pins interface.
I am sorry, are we talking about something different?

The only thing i read in this articel about MS PRO is that for the MS Pro you will need a upgrade from the software...
BUT I STILL READ NOTHING ABOUT MS DUO (DUO!!!!) PRO !!
Dear Zen Master.... where is the sentence with ms DUO pro??

I was stating a reason why the P800 might currently have a limit to reading 128Mb cards maximum, as the address system in the phone for accessing data may only be big enough for 128MB (currently!).

@blue8300
There is no difference from the Memory stick and memory stick Duo
and there is no difference with the memory stick Pro and the memory stick Duo Pro.
So the difference is the standard and the Pro! Not the size! understand??

the difference is also in the used technology..... MS and MS DUO don't use the same technology, it's not just a question of size.
Pro and Duo pPro don't use the same technology too... what is right for one is not necesseraly right for the other !!!
And if you read the MS site from Sony, you will see that even the Duo and Duo Pro don't use the same technology !! Only the look is the same

Boys stop thsi silly posts the fact is that the pro work with p800 so if its a different tec or not it not an issue pro can work backward compatibility so why argue here?

WOW!!!
I really started something here, didn't I?
Anyway, just to let you all know, I emailed the company (I mentioned at the start of this thread) with a specific question. I emailed them on the 1st September. And erm ............. up to now I have not got any response (even though they responded to my initial query within a few hours).
The cynic in me says that they weren't sure that the new 256MB and 512MB Duos would work with the P800, they just assumed so.
Anyway, here is the question I asked them (maybe we should all bombard them with the same question and see if we eventually get an answer):
Dear Sir
Thank you for your reply.
But what I need to know specifically is:
WHETHER YOU OR ANY MEMBER OF YOUR STAFF HAVE USED THESE STICKS ON A P800
The reason I ask is that there is a big debate as to whether these larger capacity Duos will actually work on the P800. Some say it will, whilst others say it won't, and yet others say that it will with a firmware upgrade (but there isn't a firmware upgrade available for the phone at the moment).
This issue with Memory Stick capacity has arisen before. The Sony CyberShot F707 can only handle 128MB or 256MB if you buy a Memory Stick with a switch thus giving you two seperate 128MB Sticks in one. Whilst the Sony CyberShot F717 can handle memory greater than 128MB.
So can you please clarify whether YOU OR ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR COMPANY HAS SAT DOWN AND TESTED THESE NEW DUOS ON THE P800.
I hope you can be of assistance and look forward to your reply.
Thanks in advance.

Well seeing as no one is going to buy a Pro card to test it, why doesn't one of the MANY phone shop employee's that bump their gums on her get a 64mb Duo pro from the back office, plop it into a P800 and give us a definative answer if the P800 can currently read ANY kind of PRO Duo!
