On older phones up to 8xx series: Yes, you can get new cells and you can open the battery housing without destruction if you're carefully.
On later phones: I don't think so. The BUS batteries for example have a gel package inside and I don't believe that you will manage to find a one that fits. But you can save some spare batteries since they last a very long time if you don't use them.

@tranced:
it depends on how long the battery has been left in the phone. Even a switched off phone consumes a little battery power so there is a discharging process. I once bought GA318 batteries that were produced 9 years ago. I charged/discharged them 2 or 3 times and they were working like brand new ones. On the other hand I have seen a lot of T28 with the battery left inside and the batteries were totally dead after 6 months.
The phones in my collection all have little stickers on the battery contacts so that they are disconnected. I wonder how many years they will survive that way

*jojo,
Re the touch screen of the r380s, you can input your txt (only) using the stylus by writing/scrolling on the screen. That's it. Text only. No scribbles whatsoever. Even if the latest sofware is r4a (i think) for the r380, I will stick to the original one in my unit. Menu and response are quite slow but I can manage as long as it is working.
For software upgrade of old models like this (r380), just follow the adage: IF IT AINT BROKEN, DONT FIX IT. Had a bad experience upgrading my old r380 before. It went dead and the official Ericsson distributor told me that it was due to the mother-board being old and corrupted files. Or perhaps, because of the reasons mentioned by Rosewhite when dealing with old Ericsson phones.
