Thanks to Tigerente I finally got an almost fully working firmware for my T36. Almost means that the phone only works with old 5V simcards. If you insert a modern 3V simcard, the status LED will blink fast and red after a while.
Now that I first hold a working T36 in my hands, it amazes me: The look is almost similar to T39 but there are some nice animations which you won't find on a T39. For those of you who have the Quicktime player installed, I made some little movies.
This is the startup animation and the menu icons. Note the message which appears for a short moment: For each simcard you insert you have to chose wether it's a normal sim or extra sim. Another interesting detail is the different signal level indicator. Be patient, the file size is almost 8MB:

The second one is about the standby display. Instead of switching between the different views, the T36 scrolls them. The file size is about 4MB:

Have fun with it. I wished, ericsson made the T39 firmware as nice as this one.

if there's no hardware differences, then it should work.

You guys have cool ideas
I once flashed my T36 with a T39 firmware because the T36 firmware was freezing in 99% of all cases. The T39 firmware was working except the wap menu: If you entered the wap menu, the phone was freezing.
Now that I read your question I just tried to flash the T36 firmware to my personal T39: It turns on and you can go through the menus but there is no reception at all.
@tranced: There are several tools to flash a T68: The cheapest solution is probably a Terminator Dongle for use with DIV. Other solutions are Cruiser or SE Toolbox III.

It is surely a hardware issue, like the 3V simcard problem on T36.
Flash/unlock solutions are not for free. Depending on what you want to do and how much safety is worth to you, you'll have to pay between 20 and 150 Euro. If you only need it once, you better give your phone to someone who can do this job for you.
