Yes, and its about time SE realise the importance of having a hardscreen smartphone in their portfolio. A java based phone, with no matter what feature, will always be inferior to a smartphone without those features. It just wont be "smart"
their new plan is .. leverage off sony and sell the "brand" (cybershot, handycam etc..etc.. )whether or not your agree it seems like the step they've decided to take to reach out to the masses. it makes perfect business sense.. but for "hardcore users" we'll be a bit left out ..unless you want a p990 which i do not..
but then again i don't find the s60 line to be that impressive.. the only new one i like is the e61.. the rest are too slow or have other issues imo.
e50 has the build quality (lacks specs)
e61 has build, UI speed but lacks camera
n80 battery of death
n73 too slow (was comparing to e61 the other day), no wifi
n93 too big
but hey i would LOVE SE TO MAKE A S60 phone or just release a UIQ hardkey phone.. it is the only thing that is missing from their line up... but i honestly thing we'll be seeing more "branding" phones in the future

i agree.. but they have to focus on the biggest market which is not the "hardcore" customers. Selling "cybershot", "handycam" and "walkman" is easier and yields bigger return cause the market of appeal is larger
for example.. over here in north amerca... we prefer 850/1900 phones.
manufacturers have only recently started consistently putting in 850. so we north americans always get screwed.. but i understand that hey 3g has a bigger market so it's more profitable to focus there.
i would love nothing but highend superphones personally but from a business sense just doesn't make sense.
nokia is ahead and the fanbase is more stable.. that's why they can make the push...and that's why their focus has shifted to s60. s40 is left behind except for 1-2 nice phones every once and a while...

lol exactly and releasing more "hardcore" focused phones will only continue that trend
this is the easiest way to get recongized and to make a solid push.. i think the SE UI has pretty much hit a point where it is stable and strong enough for "everyone" to use.. the new age s40 with a bit of extra kick "strong multitasking for example"
s40 is for my uncle and grandma now.
se a100 is for "regular" users and has some frills for hardcore
s60 is for "regular" users and also hardcore..
UIQ.. i dont' really see a place for it.. unless they pump up more and a hardkey version.... but like i said don't see it happening

se is just like

, a minority of mob fone users are addicted to the design, features and support, what se offers, but se will never ever come big out imo of course they will sell fones and be on the market, but they still have much to learn. sometimes i have the feeling, that se has no really strategy, after 5 years its time to have one.
They reinvented the Walkman and sold over 3 million in less than a year! Next year, it's rumoured that music phones will outsell iPods by some degree (today we see Apple launching their new iPod with the big thing being capacity - still no wireless, not even Bluetooth/A2DP!). Now they're trying Cyber-shot and the K800 is selling by the truck load. They have a VERY clear stategy and are working to one that they formed in 2001. They're building up slowly, and have made huge leaps. Video and gaming will follow, and UIQ will be developed too (rumours exist that it may eventually find its way into 'ordinary' shaped phones - but I'd hope stability improves before then!).
The best thing is that mid-top end phones are fully featured (Ericsson started this with the amazing T39 and R520, both class leaders). Nokia used to think they could leave features out of top end phones, or mix and match for phones in different segments (remember how long they took before Bluetooth interested them, or tri-band became commonplace? What about the horrid 128x128 pixel screens that lasted for nearly two years?).
Their arrogance lost them market share and handed it to Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola. Sure, they're still no. 1 but they could have been even further ahead by now. Some loyal followers couldn't see Nokia letting them down, but believe me - plenty did as shown when they posted their end of year figures. Oh, and remember the phase of having phones that had unusable keypads?
Nokia Nseries devices are full of firmware issues. So is the P990 (both Symbian based) but Series 40 and normal SE phones may have bugs, but never anything serious. At least SE users have been able to do updates at home.. Nokia have only just started to do this with a very limited range of handsets. Once again, Nokia show their arrogance (they could have obviously done it a long time ago but didn't for reasons unknown).
My first phone in the late 1980s was a Nokia. I've owned LOADS of models since. I have a drawer full of phones. I don't hate Nokia at all but I like toys and features, and SE currently excite me more when something new comes out. Maybe that suggested I was a sad geek, but now you look around and see everyone and his dog with a K750, W800 or W810. The K800 is now popular too. I am impressed with the N93 for video and the 3D PowerVR chipset is amazing, but I wouldn't ever buy the phone if I wasn't lucky enough to be loaned one for a long term test.
In London, you have to wonder why SE is so popular considering it's not no. 1. I know Motorola will be back with their new range of RAZR handsets, but the Walkman phone IS the RAZR for 2006. What's the Nokia phone of the moment? Nokia will tell you they're pushing the 6233 as the iconic replacement to the 6210/6310. It's a good phone, but isn't the best at music or imaging. I can't really think of their iconic phone. 8800? Nope.
Help me out here guys!

I think it is more correct to say that SE does not have quantity because it does not have resources (small company

) to come up with more phones.
That's basicaly what I said. They have bene in a far better position to delive ron quality rather than quantity. As I said, they were (and are) a relatively small manufacturer compared with Nokia. As such they haven't had the means to really push quantity so they, sensibly in my opinion, focused on quality.

I dont think quality has anything to do with it.
I disagree. They had two options; try to release a number of handsets with limited resources, which would invariably mean smaller research and development budgets for each handset, which would arguably mean fewer functions on such handsets, etc. There other choice was to focus on a few handsets, but devote more resources to them to make them high quality handsets in their class.
Quote:
It is a known fact that SE phones do not excel in quality compared to the industry. K750 was buggy when it came out. And P990 is bug-ridden even after such long delay. And I dont even want to mention the cheap quality casing used in recent phones.
No other manufacturer has ever released a handset that has bugs? With devices as complicated as modern mobiles it is ahrdly surprising that they should have a few bugs, and that applies to all manufacturers.
If you look at what SE have released over the past years one can see a consistent pattern of popular handsets that deliver good features. The public seems to agree since SE have grown their business and are selling more handsets than ever. They are now the number two manufacturer in the UK for instance.
They have developed a good reputation for handsets that deliver well on features, and which offer the customer what they want.
