A thread like this (& the one about SE boys being afraid of 6230) compels die-hard brand followers to look at reality: your brand manufacturer may just be as bad as the other! :-D I dont have a problem coming to terms with that. The comparison bit, if he is on a budget, I see no problem comparing phones in the same price bracket to see what he can get. He only carried the comparison game a little too far. @marlonski you are correct in what you say.however it only works if nokia samsung and moto dont decide to attack the smaller players in the market. Could you imagine if all those 3 reduced there profit margin by 10% and passed the discount direct to customers se would be able to compete on price or they would lose money. That was my real point though i dont see a price war until maybe another player drops out ie siemens then the big 3 may attack the rest of the market This message was posted from a Nokia

@marlonski. I think I would be worried if SE was making a HUGE profit margin on their mobiles. I would wonder about the quality of what I was buying if they were making handsets for next to nothing and charging a fortune for them.

@slatter69, yes i can see what your saying, a price war could cause some issues, from my experience of working for a market leader in a totally different industry, we would from time to time have our competitors cutting their prices to tempt people away from us and of course there would and will always be people that will buy a product purely on price, but for us we maintained our sales because we had a quality product that people were prepared to pay for.

I suppose if it happens only can decide whether they bite and enter into a price war. I never compared prices when comparing the 6230 with my K700, i got the k700 purely on what i thought I wanted from a phone.

Perhaps will not enter into a war purely on the type of customer base that they have, who knows ?

@goldenface i have to agree with that as well, think it goes to show that know how far they can push their prices and exept to a degree that an 8% margin is sufficient within this market sector. they produce IMHO a quality product. as I mentioned previously..... You only have to look at the quality of phones to see that if margin was that important to them and assuming their manufacturing processes are efficient,to increase margin they would have to reduce the spec/quality of fittings etc of the phones they are promoting as a quality item.

Assuming Slatter69's quoting correct figures one would then have to question what nokia were up to if they are in fact making a hefty 18%.

i guess to be fair to nokia etc there profit margin will be higher due to the volume of handsets they produces thus keeping production costs down. they will be able to buy the same componants as se but a low costs as they will buy in greater numbers.
its not really a criticism i was making of se more just letting people know that despite the good growth se have enjoyed over the last few years they can rest on there laurels as if a price war came about they would be the main suffers.
the figures were from se and nokias own finicial statements they were posted on here a while back when the figures where announced

@slattery69

Perhaps the reason that SE have primarily concentrated upon high-end handsets is because they realise that a price war would cause them more harm than Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, etc. By concentrating upon high-end handsets SE were perhaps hoping to avoid the segment of the market most susceptible to price wars i.e. the low to mid-range market.

perhaps but they have always had a range of mid range and low range handsets and this is the area where they are increasing there range. se really only have 3 high range hanset in the p series.after that there handsets are all mid range then some lower rnage i dont think there will be a price war unless a top 6 player either gets bought or leaves the market place

@slattery69

Imho I'm not convinced that Nokia's profit margin is simply due to getting a 'better price' for their components. Yes I agree it will give a better bargaining tool initially.

I'm also assuming it unlikely that they are buying many, if any of the same parts, or using the same suppliers. With the sort of material spend that they both have, each company will have excellent buying power.

In my experience, a good negotiator with less volume can acheive as good a deal, maybe even better. With less volume but with a more cost effective demand on the supplier, (based on the way the product is managed) can put less of a cost burden on the supplier's production enabling for a lower unit price to be negogiated. Volume doesn't neccessarily mean a better deal.

At the end of the day mate unless we work for them we're not going to know why the margins are the way they are. It maybe exactly what your saying, or that nokia are better at standardising more parts keeping costs down or just that are using more exspensive major parts, who knows ?
